Pottery is where utility and craftmanship meet. Pottery Town in Bengaluru is a thriving testament to this ancient art form that has evolved through the years and stood the test of time.
Located in the by-lanes of Benson Town, Pottery Town is an institution of generational potters. The potters here are an open book with their manufacturing process. Following age old practices of wedging, throwing and firing earthenware clay, the place is a relic of the past, yet relevant in the present. Potters here work together as a community, and share their resources equally to produce their products. The kiln is a testament to that, where every individual potter, or subset of potters fire their wares according to a timely routine each day.
Rangappa, the kiln keeper said that it’s his responsibility to make sure that there’s minimum wastage of products, as it is a wood fired medium. “Firing the pots at the kiln is the most critical aspect of the entire process. It is important to pay close attention to the temperature regulation of the kiln, as it could make or break the pots.”, said Rangappa with enthusiasm as he explained the system in detail.
Pottery Town is a melting pot of pots of all kinds! From quintessential diyas, mini kitchen sets and other toys, mud pot water filters, tea cups and many other trinkets and treasures! Surely enticing enough to pull you to purchase a piece or two.
For an insight and investment into craftmanship, a trip down to Pottery Town is a must.
